FIVE FASHION RULES TO BREAK NOW

The world of fashion is commonly associated with its own set of rules. Most of these rules are outdated and baseless. At its core, personal style is about expressing individuality, and no rules should come at the cost of that quest. Follow our top five fashion rules to break below, because when it comes to personal style, the best rules were meant to be broken.

And remember - Any look you put together can simultaneously be created with the environment, ethics, and aesthetics in mind. We encourage you to search your closet first and upcycle what you already own. When you shop, invest in timeless, high-quality pieces you can wear again and again. Consider buying second-hand or shop from sustainable, purpose-driven brands.

No White

After Labor Day

This rule is as old as time, yet has increasingly proven to be more and more outdated. The rule, originally created to separate the old money elitists from the new money group, no longer holds relevance to today’s society. There are a plethora of basics for men and women alike that can always be worn in white- think a crisp white t-shirt, a white cardigan, or white tennis shoes. Whether worn monochromatically or with colored pieces, a white staple item is never a bad idea, no matter the time of year.

Don’t Mix Athleisure with Suiting

As the rise of streetwear has overtaken modern day dressing, this rule no longer holds its weight. Although athleisure and suiting are commonly thought of in two very different breaths, they can blend together perfectly to create a strong sense of effortless luxury. Not sure where to start? Try pairing tailored joggers with a sports coat, a t-shirt with a suit, a hoodie under a jacket, or some tennis shoes with your suit.

Don’t Mix Navy

with Black

Navy and black are both considered neutrals, so why wouldn’t they be worn together? The key to achieving balance with this look is to stick to well-made basics for a casual off-duty look or a professional outfit.

A Tie Only Goes with

a Suit

Sometimes, when you “dress up”, you want your look to reflect a sense of effortlessness. One of our favorite ways to achieve this is by wearing a tie outside the context of a suit. Try pairing a tie and a motorcycle jacket, a tie and a sweater, or a tie and a track jacket. A full suit and tie only has to be as literal as you’d like it to be.

Don’t Mix Patterns and Textures

Some of the best menswear looks involve contrast, so what better way to play this up than by mixing patterns and textures? Breaking this rule is an easy way to elevate any look. Sometimes, adding unexpected elements to an outfit is what really elevates the look, so don’t be afraid to experiment within reason. Pair printed pieces with textures like leather and denim and layer in accessories like a cashmere scarf, knit tie, or silk pocket square.
